The Data

When women learn the data, they begin to see the system in which they exist and how that system has failed to value and support them. In some cases women realize how their positive experiences in coaching are privileged and not the norm. Women begin thinking about how they can effect change, advocate for themselves and each other, develop networks of support, upskill their resumes, and make informed choices about their career trajectory. Data is power, and the goal of this report is to provide data that can be used in a variety of ways to ultimately change the structure and system of sport.

The decline of women in coaching since the passage of Title IX

There’s been a historical decline in the percentage of women head coaches in the years following the passage of Title IX. In 1971, 90% of all women coaching women’s teams were women. In 2021, 41% of all women coaching women’s teams are women.

  • An analysis of total expenses indicates that Division I athletics departments are generally spending twice as much on their men’s programs than on their women’s programs.
  • Women hold approximately 25% of NCAA head coaching and athletics director positions; female conference commissioners are at around 30%.
  • In 2019-20, 16% of female head coaches of women’s teams and 16% of female athletics directors were minority women.
